Bought a treadle operated singer sewing machine for $150.00. Don’t know if that’s a good deal or not but I had been wanting one for a long time and when it came up for sale on craigslist I just had to get it. The history of the machine is this. Linda,s granny got this machine in 1911. Linda watched her granny sew clothes on it until granny passed and linda,s momma got the machine. Lindas momma had it till she passed in 2006 then Linda got it. Linda doesn’t see and needs the space this was taking up so she reluctantly sold it. She was glad to see it go to someone who appreciates fine machinery and can fix things. I told her when I restored it I’d send her a video of me sewing on it. My first project will be adding a zipper to the windshield curtains on my truck. My wife wants to try her quilting on it as well. I’m happy to have this and can’t wait to get started cleaning it up.

Sewing supplies for beginners come in all shapes and sizes. Of course you’re not going to need them all at once. We’re going to be taking a look at some of the essential items that you will need to get started along with some of the optional supplies that you can invest in later on. You will have a good idea on what to buy to start you off by the end of this information, so here goes.
Must Have Sewing Supplies for Beginners
Let’s take a quick run through of what you will need. First and foremost perhaps the main thing that you will need is an electric sewing machine. They don’t have to be massively expensive or complex. The best things you can do is research them online, and get the best quality machine that you can afford. As long as it does basic line stitching (which they all should do) and a zigzag stitch in forward and reverse, then you are good to go.
You can’t start sew without fabric. One of the best types of fabric to start practicing on is cotton. It’s very easy to handle as you get familiar with your new skill.
Most of the other sewing supplies that beginners might need don’t take any explanation so here is the list.
Scissors (ideally large for fabric and small for trimming)
Extra spare sewing machine needles

Optional Sewing Supplies for Beginners
As you progress with your new hobby, you may wish to get other items to make jobs a little easier. Here are a few options to give you some ideas.
Perhaps one of the first things that you might want to consider is getting a sewing basket to keep all of your sewing supplies in. You will be able to keep things organized in one location and easily available.
An adjustable mannequin is an ideal solution to help you when creating garments, little Jimmy won’t always want to stand there as you tweak the new item of clothing that you are making for him.
As you progress, you may want to do some more specialized sewing tasks like quilting and embroidery. There are a whole host of items available to help you develop your skills in those areas.
A great way to learn more about your new hobby is to invest in a regular sewing magazine; they are full of great tips. You can supplement this with DVD’s that are great for actually seeing how to do various tasks. Videos are also available online.
So hopefully the tips above have given you a good idea on what are essential sewing supplies for beginners and what optional things can be bought at a later date.
Happy sewing!
Sewing curtains is one of the easiest projects to do on a sewing machine, as it only requires sewing straight French seams around all four sides of the fabric.
